week 10

mar 5 to mar 11

Welcome to week ten.

Be a Maker:

Last week's swap concluded and I got a great package from a new IG friend. She had come to have me as a partner because my original partner had to drop out and did she ever have to hustle to make this amazing mini in time for shipping. I especially love the cup cozy with Aries on it!

I cannot say I have ever had a truly bad swap experience. It's fun to get something from someone that they made from the clues you've posted on IG or put into the swap application. With the hexie swaps I'm in the fun is in getting all the different hexies from the other people in the swap. I had thought I would lay off for a bit and then I found a new swap for sea minis, which I tried to stay out of, but couldn't resist in the end.

My partner I am making for loves a number of the designers that I also adore, so all the fabric will be from my stash, and she said EPP is a passion of her's! Well, fancy that, I am all about EPP right now and I have a great hexie idea for her. I'll be getting that started later this coming week because this idea is so hot in my mind I feel like I have to start it now. Besides, I am already making 100s of EPP shapes for my swap and Mischief so why not a few more?

Along with the hexies I've been working on Mischief. This quilt, what can I say, it's so versatile in design that I can play with the shapes and colors and negative space to my heart's content. I have started in one of the 4 styles that comes with the pattern and templates but I might transition to a different style... maybe?

Lastly, I am still knitting along in my Fade. I went off pattern, which isn't advised, and now I am just finishing it to the best of my ability. I took advantage of a sale on knitpicks and got a fade kit for myself since this shawl will be a gift. The fade is called Oregon Coast and it's a chroma twist variegated in fingering weight. There's an estimated 2600 yards in the kit so plenty of yarn for a fade plus extra for a hat and mitts.

Use the Stash:

All the fabrics for the mini quilt, the Mischief quilt, and the hexies came from my stash.

Practice my Craft:

Knitting and EPP this week. Since I went off pattern on the fade I am using my knit-on-the-fly skills too so that I can finish this fade and actually have a usable piece.

I never mention all the design skills I use in planning and making. I use Adobe Creative Suite in almost everything I do, along with hand drawing and lettering. These skills are the silent partner to all my patterns, quilts, stickers, and even the photography on IG. I cannot imagine anyone will ever question the providence of my work because I have LOADS of first, second, and third drafts of everything I make on paper, in the computer, and online. As a pattern designer I have heard people say "document your work" a number of times. From back in my time in college in the late 90's,  and more recently in design school from 2009-2012, learning to document and keep records of my work is part of my DNA.

Also this week:

The Erin Condren planner I ordered arrived and I am super in love with it. Because it's March, I got a deep discount on the planner and the goodies I ordered along with it. In all I spent $60 for $140 worth of planner and goodies! Super good deal and since I have a plan for how to make the most of this planner, it's a win-win.

I also have been using no-etsy kit spreads. These are just stickers from Michael's sticker books or spreads I have designed and printed myself. Lots of washi involved and plenty of space for writing in my planners.

I have also been practicing my cursive for the last several months and have finally gotten back into the swing of things, pun intended, with my loops-and-swirls handwriting. Cursive is such a great skill and it really saddens me that so many schools no longer teach it. My older son LOVES my cursive writing and hounds me constantly to teach him, which I am. I adore all the personality that cursive handwriting emotes. More then just words, it's art, and so expressive and fun!

Later this month:

Sarah Fielke is doing a BOM called Down the Rabbit Hole. The this month's instructions will be released at the end of the month. I am a month behind now though I do have my fabric selected.

On to week eleven...
