Block 37 - Tested Instructions 9.9.14

Instead of using the numerous triangles to make this block I am using a HST and FG technique I learned off of Pinterest. HST is Half Square Triangle and FG is Flying Geese. OPT: indicates optional steps for making easy extras from your leftover fabric. Numbers in (#) are quantity. Please note that the HST and FG blocks will need to be cut to size.

Use a 1/4" seam allowance except where indicated on the FG blocks.

Fabric Cuts:
Yellow (1) 3.5"x3.5"
Blue (4) 2"x2"
Lt Green (1) 4.75"x4.75", (2) 2 7/8"x2 7/8"
Dk Green (6) 2 7/8"x2 7/8"

Center Construction:
  • Draw diagonal lines across the backs of the blue squares, corner to corner. OPT: If you want to make additional HST pieces at the same time, draw a second line 1/2" from the first.
  • Line up one of the blue squares in a corner of the yellow square, right sides facing, so the lines make triangles in the corner. Pin if desired.
  • Sew along the line from corner to corner. OPT: Sew along the second line.
  • Cut the corner a 1/4" from the seam. Do not cut too close to the seam. If you did the second seam you will cut between the lines.
  • Fold the blue corner out and press the seam toward the corner. This corner of the yellow square is now blue. OPT: Press the HST open and trim dog ears.
  • Repeat for the three other corners.
  • This center piece should measure 3.5" x 3.5" when finished. OPT: 4 small HST

HST Construction:
  • Draw a diagonal line across the back of a 2 7/8"x2 7/8" Lt Green square. Place right side together with the same size Dk Green square. Pin if desired.
  • Sew 1/4" seam on each side of the line. !Important! Do not sew on the line, sew on either side of it.
  • Cut the square in half on the line.
  • Fold open the HST and press the seam towards the darker color.
  • Square up the HST at 2"x2", cutting off the dog ears in the process. There will be at least a 1/8" on each side to trim.
  • Repeat a second time for a total of four HST.

FG Construction:

There are several ways to make FG blocks. The method I am using makes 4 blocks at a time with no waste. Instead of explaining it I am just posting the Dani Fisk instruction image I found through Pinterest at Moonlight Quilters.
  • Use the 4.75"x4.75" Lt Green square and the remaining 2 7/8"x2 7/8" Dk Green squares. Follow the Fast Flying Geese Fisk Method except in Figure 3 instead of a 1/4" seam allowance use a 3/8".
  • Trim the FG to 2"x3.5" when finished. !Important! If you are using a print for your Lt Green fabric that has direction, the resulting FG using this method will rotate that print 90 degrees with each block.

Block Construction:

Assemble the block as instructed in the pattern.
Square up the block at 6.5"x6.5". This will be a 6"x6" block once it is on the quilt.
